Robotic surgery ensures reduced blood loss, minimal pain, less scarring and faster recovery

Kurukshetra, August 22, : The Department of Surgical Oncology, Fortis Hospital Mohali, has treated patients suffering from complex gynae cancers using the world’s most advanced 4th Generation Robot – Da Vinci Xi.
Dr Shweta Tahlan, Consultant, Gynae Onco-Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mohali, has treated several women suffering from uterine cancer, above 60 years of age, thereby enabling them to lead a normal life post-surgery.
In the first case, a 60-year-old woman presented at Fortis Hospital Mohali recently with complaints of post-menopausal vaginal bleeding and ovarian mass (8×10 cm), which had been increasing in size for the past two years. However, the Patient kept delaying the surgery as she had been advised an open surgery.
The Patient underwent Robot-aided Surgical Staging wherein the uterus, both tubes, ovaries, lymph nodes and omentum (large flat adipose tissue layer nestling on the surface of the intra-peritoneal organs) were removed. She had a smooth post-operative recovery and was discharged within 48 hours of the surgery.
Her final histopathology report revealed an uncommon ovarian tumour in the early stage and she was cured through surgery alone.
In another case, an 84-year-old woman presented to Fortis Hospital Mohali with post- menopausal vaginal bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge and pelvic pain.
The Patient’s biopsy revealed uterine cancer, while the imaging showed that the disease was confined to her uterus.
Dr Tahlan successfully conducted Robot-Assisted Radical Cancer Surgery on the patient. She had a smooth post-operative recovery and was discharged two days after the surgery.
Discussing the case, Dr Tahlan, said, “Patients with uterine cancer are usually old, obese and have medical problems like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease etc. We conducted robot-aided radical hysterectomy and lymph node dissection with excellent oncological outcomes.”
