Sonipat, Vaid Pandit Parmod Kaushik, November 24 : To educate and train athletes and budding sportspersons on the importance of maintaining mental health and sports-related injuries, a comprehensive Camp on Mental Health and Sports Medicine was organised at the Sports University of Haryana, Rai (Sonipat), here today. The camp was inaugurated by Dr Yogesh Chander, Dean of Academics, Sports University of Haryana, Rai (Sonipat).
More than 200 people, including students, athletes, sports coaches, players, physiotherapists and members of various sports organisations took part in the event.
Dr Himanshu Bhayana, Associate Professor, Sport Injury, PGI, Chandigarh; and Dr Aseem Mehra, Additional Professor, Department of Psychiatry, PGI, Chandigarh, examined the sportspersons and briefed them on sports-related injuries and their proper management; and maintaining good mental health.
Stating that such camps were beneficial for budding sportspersons, Dr Himanshu Bhayana, said, “Athletes undergo strenuous physical activity and follow a strict exercise regime. Hence, having good knowledge of sports-related injuries and their proper management is essential for them. I have treated several sportspersons suffering from meniscus injuries through ACL Reconstruction Surgery, Hybrid ACL Surgery, Keyhole Arthroscopy Surgery etc. Post-surgery, athletes have been able to perform better due to increased efficiency. Keyhole Arthroscopy Surgery leads to quicker recovery and the procedure enables patients to walk on the next day of the surgery. Players also need to follow the principle of warm-up, drill and cool down. These basics improve outcome and better performance on the field.
Stressing on the rehabilitation of sportspersons, Dr Bhayana, said, “Plyometrics or controlled balance exercises are important as these help in building muscle power. Making them a part of your daily physical routine can help avoid knee and shoulder injuries.”
Emphasising on the importance of mental health, Dr Aseem Mehra, said, “Stress, anxiety and pressure can affect the performance of sportspersons. This also impacts productivity and can lead to other health issues. It is important to maintain a balance and undertake mental health exercises to keep negative thoughts at bay. Practice meditation and yoga as it helps stabilise thoughts.”
